A child’s safety and comfort are every parent’s top priority — especially while traveling.

As the exclusive distributor of Sparco Kids car seats in Poland, we’re here to provide you with essential information about child car seats — including key features like the ISOFIX system, Top Tether, and i-Size safety standards.

Understanding the Importance of Car Seats

Child car seats are not only a legal requirement in many countries but, above all, a guarantee of your child’s safety. Here’s why:
1. Protection in the event of an accident: Car seats are specifically designed to protect a child’s delicate body in the case of a collision.
2. Comfort for the child: Unlike standard car seats, child car seats are adapted to a child’s smaller size, providing a more comfortable ride.
3. Peace of mind for parents: Knowing your child is safe allows you to focus on driving, reducing stress and distractions.

The Key to the ISOFIX System

ISOFIX is an international standard for installing child safety seats in cars. The main benefits of this system include:
Safety: ISOFIX provides a rigid connection between the car seat and the vehicle, reducing the risk of incorrect installation.
Ease of use: ISOFIX car seats can be installed quickly and easily, with clear indicators confirming proper attachment.
Universality: The ISOFIX system is compatible with almost all cars manufactured since 2006.
Sparco Kids car seats are equipped with the ISOFIX system, ensuring both your child’s safety and your peace of mind.

Understanding the Role of the Top Tether

Top Tether is an additional anchorage point for ISOFIX child car seats. Here’s why it’s so important:
Extra stability: Top Tether reduces forward movement of the car seat in the event of a collision, providing added protection.
Improved installation: It supports correct seat installation, lowering the risk of errors.
Compatibility: All ISOFIX car seats in Group 1 (for children from 9 to 18 kg) must include either a Top Tether or a support leg.

Introduction to the i-Size Standard

When people ask what the best car seat for children is, the most common answer is: a safe one with certification. But does certification alone guarantee the highest level of safety for our child?
Homologation simply means that a car seat meets basic standards, which are often far from the highest possible safety levels.
That’s why, in July 2013, a new safety regulation was introduced — the i-Size standard.

The Four Pillars of the i-Size Standard

The core principles of the i-Size standard are based on four main pillars:
1. Mandatory rear-facing travel for children up to 15 months of age and/or until they reach a height of 75–80 cm.
2. Seat classification based on height instead of body weight, which proves to be more accurate and practical.
3. Reduction of seat categories to only two types: universal and special seats, both of which must be equipped with the ISOFIX system.
4. Strict crash test criteria, especially for side-impact collisions, and the obligation for manufacturers to conduct qualifying safety tests.
The goal of these requirements is to minimize head and neck injuries, improve side-impact protection, and standardize seat installation procedures for better safety.
Attention!
Studies show that transporting children rear-facing in so-called RWF (Rear-Way Facing) seats increases a child’s safety by up to 5 times.
For this reason, experts recommend keeping children in rear-facing car seats even up to the age of 5.

i-Size Standard in Practice

The i-Size standard was introduced gradually in three phases:

Phase I of i-Size homologation (2013):
Classification of car seats with ISOFIX and internal harnesses as i-Size seats.
Introduction of i-Size homologation for seats designed for children up to 105 cm in height and standardization based on weight categories.

Phase II of i-Size homologation – R-129-02 (2017):
Replacement of traditional 15–36 kg car seats with models classified by height: 105–150 cm.
Introduction of two groups of car seats: universal (up to 44 cm wide) and specialized.

Phase III of homologation:
Covers, among others, car seats installed using vehicle seat belts – these seats are not classified as i-Size, but can be approved under R-129-03 if they are equipped with green belt guides.
This phase also allows the market introduction of car seats in the 9–36 kg category, provided they are equipped with the ISOFIX system and use a Top Tether attachment.

Attention!
The ECE R44-04 homologation for car seats in the group up to 18 kg began to phase out in 2017, which means that such seats can still be purchased, but manufacturers are no longer allowed to produce new models based on the R44 standard.

What about the ECE R44 standard?

Due to legislative processes and the need for significant changes at the production stage, the ECE R44 standard is still formally valid alongside the new regulations. However, it is already known that this situation will last only until August 2023.
Starting from September 2023, car seats that do not meet the i-Size R129 requirements will be withdrawn from sale.
Important: Using previously purchased ECE R44-approved seats will still be legal — the regulation does not prohibit continued use, as long as the seat remains safe, undamaged, and appropriate for the child’s weight and height.

Recommended i-Size Car Seats

Although many car seat models with R44 certification are still available, it’s worth considering a seat manufactured according to the i-Size R-129 standard. After all, your child’s safety is the top priority!
